A bank employee in Maharashtra commits suicide out of fear of contracting rabies following a dog bite

A 30-year-old bank employee in Maharashtra’s Kalyan allegedly died by suicide after becoming fearful that he might develop rabies following a dog bite, police said. The incident has drawn attention to the psychological distress that can arise from health-related anxiety and lack of awareness about timely medical treatment.

The deceased, identified as Aayush Vishwanath Amin, was a resident of Sahajeevan Society in the Tisgaon Naka area of Kalyan East, where he lived with his family. He had been employed for the past eight years at the Thane branch of Bharat Bank. According to preliminary information, Amin was bitten on the leg by a stray dog in the Tisgaon Naka locality a few days before the incident.

Reports indicate that he received only one anti-rabies injection after the bite. Family members later noticed behavioural changes over the following four days, suggesting growing anxiety and distress. On Sunday evening, when he was alone at home, Amin allegedly died by suicide by hanging.

Police recovered a suicide note from the residence in which he reportedly expressed fear that he might develop rabies symptoms, believing the infection to be inevitable. Authorities said this fear appeared to have played a significant role in his mental state prior to the incident.

Senior Police Inspector Gurav of Kolsewadi Police Station confirmed that an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered and further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

Health experts note that rabies is preventable if proper post-exposure treatment is completed promptly, including the full course of vaccination and medical supervision after an animal bite. Authorities have not indicated any evidence that the victim had developed rabies, and investigations continue.
