A suspected technical issue causes India to lose another Tejas fighter, but the pilot successfully ejects

An Indian Air Force (IAF) Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) was severely damaged in an accident earlier this month during landing after a routine training sortie, prompting an investigation and technical review of the fleet. The pilot ejected safely and did not suffer serious injuries, according to sources, though the aircraft itself sustained extensive airframe damage and may be declared a total loss.

The incident reportedly occurred at a key operational air base while the fighter jet was returning from a standard sortie. Preliminary assessments suggest a possible technical malfunction involving onboard systems, though the exact cause will be determined only after a detailed inquiry. The IAF has not yet issued an official statement regarding the accident.

This marks the third loss involving a Tejas aircraft since its induction into operational service. The first crash occurred near Jaisalmer in March 2024 during a return flight from a firepower demonstration, when the pilot successfully ejected. The second incident took place during an aerobatic display at the Dubai Airshow in November 2025, where the aircraft crashed and pilot Wing Commander Namansh Syal was killed after being unable to eject safely. Investigations into that accident are still ongoing.

The latest mishap comes at a time when the Tejas Mk1A programme is already facing delays, with deliveries reportedly running nearly two years behind schedule despite the IAF placing orders for around 180 Mk1A fighters. Defence authorities are expected to conduct comprehensive technical checks and analyse flight data and maintenance records to determine whether systemic issues contributed to the accident.

Officials are likely to review operational and safety protocols as part of the inquiry, while the outcome of the investigation will determine whether additional inspections or operational restrictions are required across the Tejas fleet.
