A woman from Assam was compelled to pay Rs 10,000 after being raped by 7-Seven in front of her boyfriend

A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and robbed by a group of seven men near Silchar in Assam, police said, in an incident that has led to multiple arrests and an ongoing search for the remaining accused. Authorities confirmed that the assault took place on February 19 when the woman and her boyfriend were inside a car in a secluded area.

According to the police, the couple was approached by a group of men who arrived in an SUV. The men reportedly questioned them about their presence at the location before launching an attack. Investigators said the assailants allegedly assaulted the couple, threatened them, and then raped the woman one by one in front of her boyfriend. The accused are also alleged to have extorted Rs 10,000 from the victims during the incident.

Following the survivor’s complaint, a case was registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to gang rape, extortion by threat of death, dacoity, criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly, use of criminal force against a woman, and acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty. Police recorded the survivor’s statement and initiated an investigation.

Officials said two suspects have been arrested after being identified by the survivor, while efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the remaining accused. A senior police officer confirmed that search operations are underway and further arrests are expected as the investigation progresses.

In a related development, a Silchar-based journalist who reported on the incident alleged that he was assaulted by family members of one of the accused. The journalist claimed he was stopped near the National Highway Road police station, questioned about his reporting, and physically attacked before bystanders intervened. He has filed a separate complaint, and police have arrested one person in connection with that assault.

Authorities stated that both investigations are continuing, with additional legal action expected based on evidence collected during the probe.
