AIADMK MP's contempt notice against the Tamil Nadu vigilance committee in the cash-for-jobs controversy

AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP Inbadurai has moved the Madras High Court seeking permission to initiate contempt proceedings against the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), alleging that the agency failed to comply with a court order directing it to register a case against DMK Minister KN Nehru in the alleged cash-for-jobs scam. The development comes at a politically sensitive time as Tamil Nadu prepares for elections and follows a formal warning issued by the MP to the vigilance agency a day earlier.

According to Inbadurai, the High Court had previously instructed the DVAC to initiate proceedings against the minister, but no FIR had been registered even several days after the order. He stated that his counsel mentioned the matter before the Chief Justice, who granted permission to proceed with filing a contempt petition. The court asked the petitioner to return once the plea was formally numbered, after which it would be taken up for consideration in accordance with procedural requirements.

The MP alleged that state officials were deliberately failing to implement judicial directions despite the absence of any stay order from a higher court. He argued that since the Tamil Nadu government had not approached an appellate court to challenge or suspend the High Court’s directive, the continued inaction by the vigilance agency amounted to criminal contempt of court.

The case relates to allegations of a cash-for-jobs racket linked to the Municipal Administration Department. Investigative findings cited in an Enforcement Directorate dossier reportedly pointed to electronic evidence recovered during searches, which allegedly indicated an organised system of bribery involving payments in exchange for government appointments. The ED is said to have informed the court that the material suggested a structured recruitment scam involving multiple posts.

With the High Court now permitting the filing of a contempt petition, the matter is expected to proceed through formal legal scrutiny once procedural steps are completed. The case has gained political significance amid the ongoing electoral climate, as opposition leaders continue to press for action while the vigilance agency’s response remains under judicial examination.
