The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of US television anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its fourth week, with her family announcing a $1 million reward for information leading to her recovery. The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue to pursue multiple leads following her unexplained disappearance from her home near Tucson, Arizona.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 and was reported missing the following day after relatives were unable to contact her. Investigators believe she may have been abducted during the night after surveillance footage captured a masked individual outside her front door hours before she vanished. Law enforcement officials have treated the case as suspicious from the outset.
Appealing publicly for assistance, Savannah Guthrie urged anyone with information to come forward, saying someone may hold crucial details that could help bring her mother home. In social media posts, she acknowledged growing fears about her mother’s condition, noting that Nancy Guthrie requires daily medication, which has heightened concerns about her survival as time passes. Despite these fears, the family continues to hold hope that she may still be alive and has indicated willingness to respond to any credible ransom demand.
The investigation involves local authorities as well as federal agencies. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said it has received more than 20,000 tips since the disappearance was reported. The FBI has released images taken from a doorbell camera showing a masked man outside the residence, appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the individual.
New developments suggest the same masked figure may have appeared near the property on more than one occasion, raising the possibility that the home had been monitored beforehand. Some publicly released images appear to have been captured on different days, although officials have cautioned that exact timestamps have not been confirmed and such interpretations remain under review.
Forensic teams continue to analyse evidence collected from the property and surrounding area. Investigators confirmed that drops of Nancy Guthrie’s blood were found on the front porch, and DNA testing is being conducted on items recovered nearby, including gloves discovered during search operations.
The disappearance has prompted an extensive community response across southern Arizona, with volunteers and organised search teams combing neighbourhoods and nearby desert terrain in the Catalina Foothills region where she lived. Authorities have also examined potential cross-border angles due to Tucson’s proximity to Mexico, though investigators say there is currently no evidence suggesting she was taken outside the United States or that organised crime is involved. Family members have been ruled out as suspects.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that investigators remain committed to resolving the case, emphasising that efforts will continue regardless of how long it takes. The newly announced $1 million reward adds to more than $200,000 already offered by law enforcement agencies and private donors, bringing the total reward pool to over $1.2 million.
The Guthrie family said the expanded reward is intended to encourage anyone with relevant knowledge—regardless of circumstances—to come forward and assist investigators in determining what happened and locating Nancy Guthrie.
