As relations improve, India will reinstate all visa services in Bangladesh

India is preparing to fully resume visa services in Bangladesh, signalling a possible improvement in bilateral relations after a prolonged period of diplomatic strain. According to Bangladeshi media reports, Aniruddha Das, India’s senior consular official in Sylhet, said that steps are already underway to restore all categories of visas, with some services having partially resumed.

Das stated that medical and double-entry visas are currently being issued, while preparations are ongoing to restart additional categories, including regular travel visas. Speaking at the Sylhet District Press Club, he emphasised that India–Bangladesh relations are rooted in mutual respect and longstanding cultural and historical ties, and expressed optimism about strengthening people-to-people engagement.

India had suspended visa services beginning December 17 last year after security concerns emerged, including threats directed at Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh. The suspension came during a period of strained relations following political unrest in Bangladesh during July–August 2024, which led to the fall of the Awami League government and the departure of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bilateral ties deteriorated further under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, a period marked by heightened anti-India sentiment and the release of individuals viewed by New Delhi as hostile to its interests. The diplomatic chill contrasted sharply with the close cooperation seen since 2009, when Hasina’s government maintained strong engagement with India.

The recent political transition in Dhaka, which brought Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman to power after the February 12 elections, appears to have opened space for renewed dialogue. Officials on both sides have indicated a willingness to stabilise relations and rebuild cooperation, particularly in areas that directly affect ordinary citizens, such as travel, medical access and cross-border exchanges.

Indian officials have framed the resumption of visa services as part of a broader effort to restore normalcy and reinforce long-term ties, highlighting shared cultural links and the importance of sustained engagement between the populations of the two neighbouring countries.
