A man died after collapsing during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s public rally in Tamil Nadu’s Salem on Friday, with preliminary findings indicating heatstroke and dehydration as the primary causes. According to police sources, the victim, identified as Suraj, fainted at the venue amid intense crowd conditions and later succumbed despite being rushed for medical treatment. Authorities also noted that he had pre-existing heart ailments, which may have worsened his condition.
Police officials said overcrowding may have contributed to the incident, as organisers allegedly permitted more than 7,000 people to enter the rally venue despite an approved capacity of 5,000. Sources further indicated that individuals with health issues were also allowed inside, raising concerns about crowd management and safety protocols. Officials stated that an FIR could be registered against the organisers once the exact cause of death is formally confirmed.
TVK leader CTR Nirmal Kumar expressed condolences over the incident, stating that the victim had suddenly collapsed due to ill health during the gathering and was immediately provided first aid before being taken to hospital. He described the death as deeply tragic and extended sympathy to the bereaved family.
The incident also triggered political reactions. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan drew criticism after posting a sarcastic remark on social media referencing the tragedy, which attracted widespread attention for its tone.
The Salem rally had been organised under heightened security arrangements following a deadly stampede at a TVK event in Karur last year that claimed 41 lives. Authorities had deployed heavy police presence, conducted vehicle checks at entry points and implemented traffic diversions to prevent overcrowding and maintain order.
Addressing supporters at the rally, Vijay reiterated that his party would contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections independently, ruling out alliances with either the INDIA bloc or the NDA. He also claimed that TVK’s proposal of power-sharing with allies had reshaped political discussions in the state and expressed confidence that the party would secure an absolute majority and form the next government.
