Galti se hogaya: A drum murder suspect in the horrific death of a father in Lucknow

Five days after the shocking Lucknow blue drum murder case came to light, the accused, 21-year-old Akshat Pratap Singh, has spoken publicly for the first time about the killing of his father, businessman Manvendra Singh. While being escorted for a medical examination, he briefly addressed reporters and claimed that the incident was accidental. Repeating that “it happened by mistake,” he denied any involvement of his sister when questioned about her alleged role in the crime. Authorities are expected to produce him before a court next, where investigators are likely to seek further custody for continued interrogation.

The case initially drew attention over claims that academic pressure related to the NEET examination triggered the crime. However, investigators now say the motive may have extended beyond studies, with emerging information suggesting tensions linked to control of the family’s business interests. Despite the accused describing the shooting as unintentional, police officials have not accepted this explanation and continue to examine evidence indicating possible planning and efforts to conceal the crime.

The incident has cast a deep shadow over the Ashiyana neighbourhood in Lucknow, where residents remain stunned by the brutality of the killing and the subsequent dismemberment of the body. Investigators allege that Akshat had ordered knives online and later purchased a saw and a blue plastic drum, which were allegedly used to cut and conceal the body after the shooting.

Family members have also challenged the narrative that exam pressure alone led to the murder. Manvendra Singh’s sister, Sarla Singh, said her brother had assured his son of full support in pursuing education and was even willing to fund admission to expensive institutions if required. She expressed disbelief that such resentment could have developed within the family and rejected speculation that academic expectations were the sole cause.

According to Sarla, Akshat’s sister, who was present at the time of the shooting, described being frightened after hearing the gunfire. She reportedly confronted her brother, who claimed the shot was fired accidentally during an argument and later asked that the matter be kept quiet. The sister allegedly left the room out of fear and did not immediately report the incident.

Speaking emotionally about her brother, Sarla described him as a deeply caring figure who had supported the family through difficult times, particularly after the death of his wife in 2018 following brain surgery. She also dismissed rumours circulating in the neighbourhood about his personal life, stating there was no truth to allegations regarding extramarital relationships.

As investigators continue forensic analysis and reconstruct the sequence of events, the focus of the probe has shifted from the shooting itself to the actions taken afterward, including alleged attempts to destroy evidence and mislead authorities. The case remains under active investigation as police work to determine intent, motive and the extent of involvement of others connected to the incident.
