At least five people, including a firefighter, were injured after a powerful explosion devastated a church in upstate New York on Tuesday, leaving the structure largely destroyed and prompting a large emergency response. Two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, while several others required medical attention following the blast.
Emergency crews had been dispatched to Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Boonville after reports of a strong gas odour inside the building. Witnesses later told investigators that the smell of gas had been noticeable before the incident. Authorities said the explosion occurred while first responders were already present at the scene assessing the suspected leak.
According to a statement issued by the church, the pastor and another congregant had earlier contacted a propane supplier to report concerns about a possible gas leak within the premises. Both individuals were among those injured when the explosion occurred. Officials noted that the church relied on propane cylinders for heating, and preliminary assessments suggest the blast caused catastrophic structural damage.
The building was left smouldering and heavily damaged, with much of the structure destroyed by the force of the explosion. Multiple fire departments from nearby areas responded to assist in rescue operations, firefighting efforts and securing the site. Authorities temporarily shut down State Route 12 near the church to allow emergency teams to conduct investigations and ensure public safety.
Officials said there is currently no indication of criminal intent, and investigators are focusing on determining the exact cause of the explosion, including whether the suspected propane leak triggered the incident. The situation remains under investigation as crews continue to assess the damage and gather evidence.
