The brother of the teenage driver accused in a fatal road accident in Delhi has defended his sibling, claiming that while the teen may have lacked a valid driving licence, he did not flee the scene and instead helped the injured immediately after the crash. Speaking to India Today, he presented an alternative version of events, disputing allegations made by the victim’s family regarding negligence and abandonment following the incident.
According to the accused’s brother, the collision occurred when the victim’s motorcycle suddenly emerged from behind a bus at high speed, leaving little time for the driver to react. He maintained that the teenager remained at the spot after the accident and assisted those injured, including lifting the victim and checking on another injured individual, identified as a cab driver, who was subsequently sent to a hospital for treatment. This account counters claims made by the victim’s mother, Sahil Dhaneshra’s mother, who alleged that her son was left unattended on the road for nearly two hours after the crash.
The brother also challenged allegations that the SUV involved in the accident was being driven recklessly. He argued that if the vehicle had been travelling at high speed, the driver would have sustained visible injuries, stating that the teenager remained unharmed, wore a seat belt, and was driving slowly at the time of impact. He further claimed that the family’s residence is located only about 200 metres from the accident site, adding that the car had taken a left turn shortly before the crash and could not have accelerated significantly within such a short distance.
In defending his sibling’s character, the brother described him as a high-achieving student and a gold medallist in academics, suggesting that his background reflected responsible behaviour. He also rejected allegations made by the victim’s family that attempts were made to threaten or offer money to suppress the matter, calling those accusations baseless.
The incident continues to be under investigation, with authorities examining multiple accounts and evidence to determine the circumstances leading to the fatal collision.
