The AAP government approves a flood protection plan worth Rs 52 crore for Sri Anandpur Sahib in Punjab

The Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has approved a ₹52 crore flood protection initiative for Sri Anandpur Sahib, aimed at safeguarding vulnerable villages from recurring monsoon-related damage. The project focuses on strengthening embankments, constructing revetments, and developing durable infrastructure designed to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding on homes, farmland, and local communities.

State Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced the plan, stating that the measures will primarily target settlements located along the Satluj and Swan rivers, areas that have historically experienced severe flooding during heavy rains. The government has emphasised that the initiative is intended to provide long-term and sustainable protection rather than temporary relief measures.

According to Bains, infrastructure works worth ₹52 crore have already been tendered and initiated, with on-ground construction expected to accelerate within the next two weeks. He also indicated that additional flood-control projects valued at approximately ₹30 crore are currently in the planning stage, reflecting a broader strategy to strengthen disaster resilience across the region.

The approved plan outlines several village-specific interventions. Dasgrain and Mahain will receive revetment works worth ₹1 crore to reinforce riverbanks and prevent erosion. Harsa Bela, which previously benefited from flood protection works costing ₹4.5 crore, has now been allocated an additional ₹9 crore to upgrade a 2,200-foot revetment. Mehndli Kalan is set to receive a new 1,800-foot revetment project valued at more than ₹8.75 crore.

In Agampur, authorities will construct a 3,200-foot revetment costing ₹12 crore, aimed at protecting both the village and nearby bridge approaches from floodwaters. Burj has been allocated ₹7 crore for a 700-foot revetment, while Ajauli will receive a similar protective structure costing ₹3.5 crore. Lodhipura is also included in the plan, with ₹9 crore earmarked for the construction of a 2,000-foot revetment to strengthen local flood defences.

Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, Bains said the lessons learned from last year’s floods prompted the government to prioritise stronger and more permanent protective measures. He stressed that ensuring the safety of residents remains a top priority and that the new infrastructure is designed to provide lasting security against recurring natural threats.

The minister added that further projects covering areas such as Bhalan, Triveni Mandir, Nangran, and nearby locations are either underway or have received approval. These efforts form part of the state government’s wider push to enhance flood management systems and build resilient infrastructure across flood-prone regions of the constituency.
