YouTube has begun introducing AI-powered playlist creation, allowing users to generate customised playlists simply by entering prompts. The feature, however, is restricted to paid subscribers, specifically those with YouTube Premium or Google One memberships.
Eligible subscribers can use the tool across both YouTube and YouTube Music, enabling AI-generated playlists for videos as well as audio content. The functionality is being made available on Android and iOS devices as part of Google’s broader push toward AI-driven personalisation.
To access the option, Premium users can open the YouTube app, navigate to the Library tab, tap “New,” and select “AI playlist.” The app then asks for a request, which can be provided through text or voice input.
Users can submit prompts describing moods, genres, or themes — for example, “death metal,” “sad post-rock,” “chill house mix,” “indie pop,” or “90s Bollywood classics.” The AI system quickly compiles a playlist tailored to the description.
This development expands on YouTube’s earlier experiments with AI. In mid-2024, the platform trialled a feature that let users create personalised radio stations through prompts. The new playlist generator represents a more polished iteration now reaching a broader base of subscribers.
The rollout arrives as YouTube continues enhancing the value of its Premium offering. Reports recently indicated the company is testing adjustments such as limiting lyrics access for some non-paying users, suggesting additional Premium-exclusive features may be on the horizon.
Earlier in the month, Google revealed it had surpassed 325 million paid subscriptions across services including YouTube Premium and Google One.
