Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving head of an elected government, completing 8,931 days in public office across his tenures as chief minister and prime minister. With this milestone, he has surpassed Pawan Kumar Chamling, who previously held the record with 8,930 days as the Chief Minister of Sikkim.
Modi began his journey as Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, serving for over 13 years before stepping down in May 2014 to assume national leadership. He was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, and has since gone on to win three consecutive general elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024, becoming the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha and maintain it across successive terms.
Over the course of his political career, Modi has also become the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister with the most extensive prior experience in a state leadership role. His tenure reflects a continuous presence in the executive office spanning more than two decades.
The achievement drew congratulatory messages from leaders across the ruling BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners. Amit Shah praised Modi’s decades of public service, highlighting his role in shaping development, strengthening national pride, and delivering welfare measures.
JP Nadda described Modi’s leadership as focused on nation-first governance and transformative policies aimed at empowering key sections of society, including the poor, youth, women, and farmers. He also credited Modi with enhancing India’s confidence and influence on the global stage.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar noted that Modi’s long tenure reflects sustained public trust and a strong connection with citizens. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also extended their congratulations, commending his leadership and commitment to national progress.
The milestone underscores Modi’s long-standing role in shaping governance at both the state and national levels, marking a significant moment in India’s political landscape.
