A ropeway collapses at a temple in Chhattisgarh amid the Navratri throng, leaving one person dead and seventeen injured

A tragic ropeway accident at the Khallari Mata Temple in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district caused widespread panic among devotees, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to 17 others. The incident occurred on Sunday during the heavy rush of Navratri, when large numbers of pilgrims had gathered at the hilltop shrine.

Situated लगभग 3,000 feet above ground, the temple attracts significant footfall, especially during festival periods. According to initial reports, the ropeway system—commonly used by devotees to reach the temple—suffered a sudden failure when a cable snapped midway. This caused several cabins to fall abruptly, leaving passengers injured and triggering chaos at the site. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of confusion and fear as people rushed to safety following the unexpected collapse.

Authorities confirmed that 17 individuals sustained injuries in the mishap. Among them, one woman succumbed to her injuries. Five of the injured were shifted to hospitals in Raipur for advanced medical treatment, with at least one person reported to be in critical condition. Others received primary medical care locally and were later discharged.

The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the maintenance and safety of the ropeway system, particularly during high-traffic periods such as Navratri. Officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. The probe will focus on whether technical failure, lack of proper maintenance, or negligence contributed to the cable snap.

Meanwhile, rescue and relief operations were promptly carried out at the site, and authorities are continuing their inquiry to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents in the future.
