A young woman in Agra died by suicide after recording a video in which she accused a police constable of subjecting her to physical and mental harassment during a long-term live-in relationship. The incident has sparked widespread discussion in the city after the video message, recorded shortly before her death, began circulating widely on social media.
According to police officials, the woman had been in a live-in relationship with constable JB Gautam, who was posted at the Tajganj police station in Agra. Investigators said the two had been living together for several years. Before taking the extreme step, the woman recorded a video in which she described the difficulties she faced in the relationship and accused the constable of exploiting her by promising marriage.
In the video, which surfaced online soon after her death, the woman alleged that Gautam had kept her “like a wife” for nearly four years but eventually refused to marry her. She claimed that throughout the relationship he repeatedly assured her that they would get married, which led her to continue the relationship. However, she said that he later began distancing himself and avoided fulfilling the promise of marriage.
The woman also alleged that she was subjected to emotional and physical harassment during the course of the relationship. In the recorded message, she stated that whenever she asked him about marriage, he would respond by saying that his family would never approve of the union.
In the emotional video statement, the woman said that after living with her for years as if they were married, the constable had ultimately abandoned her. She expressed distress over the situation and spoke about the emotional toll the relationship had taken on her.
The woman also mentioned the involvement of the constable’s family members in her statement. She claimed that his elder brother had encouraged her to move forward and get married, while the constable himself insisted that his family would never allow the marriage to take place. She further alleged that the constable’s brother was involved in a similar relationship with another woman.
In the video, she also expressed concern that the accused might not face consequences because he was a member of the police force. She said she was not necessarily insisting that he marry her but urged that he should not deceive another woman in the same way.
After the woman’s death, the video message quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing significant public attention to the case. Following the circulation of the video and a complaint lodged by the woman’s family, the police registered a case against the constable.
Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations, Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Ali Abbas ordered departmental action against the accused officer. As an initial step, constable JB Gautam was suspended from his duties.
Subsequently, police authorities arrested the constable in connection with the case. Officials confirmed that Gautam was presented before a court following his arrest and was later sent to judicial custody in jail.
Meanwhile, police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Authorities stated that the video recorded by the woman before her death is being treated as an important piece of evidence and will be examined as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Officials also confirmed that the woman’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. After the necessary procedures were completed, the body was handed over to her family members.
Police authorities have stated that further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation, and all relevant evidence, including the video and statements from witnesses, will be examined carefully before proceeding with the case.
