A woman was allegedly killed in a brutal daylight attack at a bus stand in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district on Sunday after her estranged husband chased and assaulted her with a sickle. The accused later surrendered at a nearby police station, officials said.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Sudhakar, a resident of Palamadai. He was married to the victim, Pechiyammal, and the couple have two children. Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had been living separately for some time due to ongoing marital differences.
Authorities said the incident occurred when Pechiyammal was travelling to work on Sunday morning. Sudhakar allegedly followed her and waited for an opportunity to confront her during her commute.
When Pechiyammal got down from a bus at the Sandipu bus stand, Sudhakar reportedly approached her and began chasing her in full public view. Witnesses said the situation escalated quickly when he allegedly pulled out a sickle and ran after her inside the bus stand area.
Police said Sudhakar attacked Pechiyammal multiple times with the weapon, causing severe injuries that led to her death on the spot. The attack occurred in broad daylight, shocking commuters and bystanders present at the location.
Investigators suspect that the accused may have carried out the attack due to suspicion that his wife was involved in an illicit relationship. Police said this angle is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
After the incident, police teams reached the scene and recovered the victim’s body. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination as part of the legal procedure.
Meanwhile, Sudhakar walked into the Sandipu police station shortly after the attack and surrendered himself to the authorities. Police officials confirmed that he has been taken into custody.
Investigators have begun a detailed inquiry into the circumstances leading up to the crime. Officials said they are questioning the accused and collecting statements from witnesses who were present at the bus stand during the incident.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses and police continue to gather evidence related to the case.
