Conflicts at Ram Navami in Murshidabad, Purulia: stones thrown, arson attack

Violence disrupted Ram Navami processions in parts of West Bengal, particularly in Murshidabad and Purulia districts, prompting authorities to deploy security forces and take measures to restore order.

In Murshidabad’s Raghunathganj area, tensions escalated after an altercation between two communities during a Ram Navami procession turned violent. Both sides reportedly engaged in stone-pelting and acts of vandalism. One group alleged that their procession was attacked with stones, while the other claimed that provocative remarks during the rally triggered the clash.

Police officials stated that the situation was eventually brought under control after local police and central forces were deployed. Authorities have since been conducting flag marches in the area to maintain peace and deter further disturbances. Security has been tightened, and residents have been urged to remain calm. Officials have also warned that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the violence.

A similar incident occurred in Purulia’s Para region on the same day. According to local authorities, a vehicle carrying participants heading to a Ram Navami rally was allegedly vandalised by members of another community. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries during the attack.

The incident led to heightened tensions, with both sides engaging in stone-pelting before the situation was brought under control. A joint team of central forces and state police intervened to restore order and prevent further escalation.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely in both districts to ensure that law and order is maintained and to prevent any recurrence of violence.
