Due to suspicions of theft, a man hangs his daughters, ages 10 and 11, upside down overnight; one dies

A deeply disturbing case of suspected child abuse has been reported from Maharashtra’s Sangli district, where a 10-year-old girl lost her life, and her elder sister was left critically injured after allegedly being subjected to extreme torture by their father.

The accused, identified as Dadu Haibat Yamgar, is alleged to have tied the hands and legs of his daughters—10-year-old Sanika and 11-year-old Anuja—and suspended them upside down from an iron structure inside their home around 5 pm on Wednesday. According to initial reports, the girls were left hanging in that condition throughout the night, crying in pain and repeatedly asking for water, which they were allegedly denied.

The ordeal came to an end only the following morning when their grandfather intervened and untied them around 6 am. By that time, Sanika had died, while Anuja was found unconscious and in a critical condition. She was immediately taken to a hospital, where she later regained consciousness and recounted the incident to doctors, leading to the registration of a police complaint.

Sanika was declared dead upon arrival at a private hospital.

Preliminary findings suggest that the father acted on suspicions of theft reportedly raised by neighbours, which led to the extreme and violent punishment.

In a further alarming development, it is alleged that family members attempted to conduct Sanika’s last rites quietly in an effort to conceal the incident. However, the matter came to light after Anuja’s statement.

Reports also indicate that the accused allegedly attacked the girls’ grandfather with a sharp weapon and issued threats after he intervened to rescue them.

Police have taken the father into custody, and a detailed investigation into the case is currently underway.
