As tensions in the Middle East escalate, one of the United States’ most critical military aircraft — often referred to as a “Doomsday plane” — was recently spotted flying over Fresno in California. The aircraft was seen performing low-altitude manoeuvres over the city, drawing attention amid heightened security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The sighting comes at a time when the Federal Bureau of Investigation has reportedly warned law-enforcement agencies that Iran could attempt a retaliatory drone attack targeting the US West Coast. According to reports cited by ABC News, intelligence suggested that Tehran may have considered launching unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel positioned off the American coastline, with potential targets somewhere in California.
The aircraft observed over Fresno was identified as the Boeing E-6B Mercury, a specialised military platform designed to act as an airborne command centre during national emergencies, including nuclear conflict. The plane reportedly spent about two hours conducting landing approaches and “touch-and-go” training exercises at Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Airport officials confirmed that such exercises are common at the facility. According to airport spokesperson Vikkie Calderon, the airport’s long runways, navigation systems and location make it suitable for a variety of military and civilian training operations.
The E-6B Mercury plays a crucial role in the United States’ nuclear command, control and communications infrastructure. The aircraft ensures that the country’s leadership remains connected with strategic nuclear forces during extreme emergencies, including situations where ground command centres might be disabled.
Operating as an airborne relay, the aircraft can maintain communication between the US President, senior defence officials and the country’s nuclear forces. Even in the event of catastrophic damage to ground-based systems, the plane can continue transmitting instructions to military units.
The E-6B is capable of coordinating with all three components of the United States’ nuclear triad: nuclear-armed bombers, land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles. In worst-case scenarios, the aircraft can also transmit launch orders if conventional command systems fail.
Major General Garrison previously explained that the aircraft is capable of simultaneously managing communications with bombers on alert, missile systems that remain continuously ready, and ballistic missile submarines operating beneath the oceans.
The recent sighting follows another appearance of a similar strategic aircraft earlier this year. Two months ago, a Boeing E-4B Nightwatch — another airborne command platform designed for senior US leadership during national emergencies — landed at Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles.
That aircraft was carrying US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth as part of the “Arsenal of Freedom” tour aimed at showcasing American military capabilities and strengthening public support for defence initiatives.
