Following a cab driver's attempted rape, a Delhi tourist spends the night in a forest in Uttarakhand

A taxi driver was arrested in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district for allegedly attempting to rape and assault a 31-year-old woman tourist from Delhi during a late-night journey. The incident occurred on Friday while the woman was travelling toward Nainital by taxi.

Police said the attack took place near Baldiyakhan, a location situated roughly 10 kilometres from Nainital. According to the complaint, the driver allegedly molested the woman, attempted to sexually assault her, and physically attacked her inside the vehicle. When she resisted and tried to protect herself, the accused reportedly fled from the scene, taking her belongings and mobile phone with him.

Deeply distressed by the incident and left stranded in an unfamiliar area, the woman sought safety by moving into a nearby forested area, where she remained overnight. She was later located and rescued by local police personnel during search operations.

The accused was identified as Deepak Singh Bora, a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand. Police apprehended him within approximately ten hours of the incident. He has been booked under multiple legal provisions, including charges related to attempted rape and assault. Authorities also recovered the victim’s stolen mobile phone and seized the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.

The woman underwent a medical examination at a local hospital on Saturday as part of standard legal and investigative procedures.

Senior Superintendent of Police Manjunath TC stated that the victim had boarded the taxi from Kathgodam en route to Nainital when the incident occurred near Baldiyakhan. He confirmed that the woman managed to escape the vehicle and run into a forested area, while the driver fled with her possessions.

The officer emphasized that ensuring the safety of women and tourists remains a top priority for law enforcement authorities and assured that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in such crimes. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
