In the midst of the Iran War, another Indian was slain in Riyadh, bringing the total to six

An Indian citizen lost his life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, bringing the total number of Indian fatalities in the conflict to six. Although the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia attributed the incident to “recent developments” that occurred on March 18. In an official statement shared on X, the embassy confirmed that it is in ongoing contact with the victim’s family and is providing all necessary support during this difficult time.

The developments mentioned by the embassy relate to events on March 18, when Saudi authorities reported intercepting four ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh. Despite successfully neutralizing the threats, fragments and debris from the intercepted missiles reportedly fell near a refinery south of the capital. It is believed that the Indian national may have been fatally struck by this falling debris.

These missile launches were reportedly retaliation for Israeli strikes on Iran’s South Pars gas field, the largest natural gas field in the world. This facility supports Iran’s domestic electricity generation and contributes significantly to global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies.

According to reports, including coverage by Al Jazeera, the March 18 incident marked an unusual moment for residents in Riyadh, as many heard explosions or received emergency warning alerts on their phones for the first time since the conflict began.

Since hostilities escalated on February 28, Iran has launched numerous missiles and cost-effective drones toward Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. These attacks seem part of a broader strategy to exert economic pressure by disrupting key energy supply routes. However, Saudi Arabia has intercepted most of these threats, minimizing large-scale damage.

The situation is particularly alarming given the large population of Indian expatriates residing in Gulf countries. Hundreds of thousands of Indians live and work in sectors such as construction, healthcare, hospitality, and finance, making them vulnerable to regional instability.

So far, six Indian nationals have lost their lives due to incidents linked to the conflict. On March 14, two Indians were killed in a drone strike in Sohar, Oman. Earlier, another Indian died in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia, after an Iranian missile—intended to hit radar installations—struck a residential area instead.

In addition to the confirmed fatalities, one Indian citizen remains missing. Aseem Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf), stated during a media briefing that Indian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and the UAE are actively coordinating with local authorities to gather information and locate the missing individual.

He noted with regret that six Indian nationals have lost their lives so far, while efforts continue to find the missing person and ensure the safety of Indian citizens across the region.
