India is prepared for an energy shock, and the PM warns of difficult times to come

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India remains prepared to handle potential energy disruptions despite escalating tensions in West Asia and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. He acknowledged that the ongoing conflict could have long-term economic, security, and humanitarian consequences, urging the country to stay prepared for sustained impact.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Modi highlighted that India’s energy security is supported by a strategic petroleum reserve of over 53 lakh metric tonnes, with plans underway to expand it to 65 lakh metric tonnes. He emphasised that building such reserves has been a priority over the past decade to safeguard against global supply shocks and geopolitical instability.

He also pointed to India’s efforts to diversify its energy imports, noting that the country now sources oil and gas from 41 nations, compared to 27 earlier. This broader supplier base, along with increased refining capacity, has reduced dependence on any single region and strengthened overall resilience.

At the same time, the Prime Minister underlined the challenges posed by the conflict, particularly as a significant portion of India’s crude oil, gas, fertilisers, and other essential imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that disruptions in such critical maritime routes are unacceptable and confirmed that India is actively engaging diplomatically to ensure the safe passage of its vessels.

Despite the volatility, Modi said that India is continuing to meet its energy requirements without interruption. He noted that household energy security remains a priority, especially as the country imports a large share of its LPG needs.

The situation remains complex, with Iran restricting movement through the Strait of Hormuz and global oil prices rising sharply. However, the government maintains that through strategic reserves, diversified sourcing, and continuous international coordination, India is equipped to manage the evolving crisis.
