Following the resignation of CEO Pieter Elbers, Rahul Bhatia has stepped in to assume interim leadership of IndiGo. In his first internal message to employees, he addressed the airline’s recent operational challenges while outlining the direction he intends to take during the transition period.
Bhatia opened his note by acknowledging the operational disruptions that occurred in December, describing the episode as unacceptable and deeply regrettable. He said that passengers should not have faced such inconvenience and recognised that employees—particularly frontline staff—were unfairly placed under pressure despite not being responsible for the situation.
He extended sincere appreciation to team members who worked relentlessly to restore normal operations during the difficult phase. Highlighting their perseverance and professionalism, Bhatia commended employees for their commitment, resilience, and unwavering dedication to keeping services running under stressful circumstances.
Assuming his expanded responsibilities, Bhatia emphasised that leadership accountability extends equally to customers, shareholders, and the workforce. He reaffirmed his focus on reinforcing organisational culture, strengthening operational efficiency, and maintaining consistently high service standards for passengers.
He also reminded employees of the airline’s founding objective of making air travel affordable and widely accessible across India. Stressing unity and discipline, he encouraged teams to remain aligned, responsible, and service-oriented while continuing to provide a smooth and respectful travel experience.
Concluding his message, Bhatia underlined the importance of collective effort in rebuilding customer confidence and sustaining the airline’s reputation. He urged employees to stay focused, uphold accountability, and work together with determination to deliver reliable, affordable, and hassle-free services.
He ended on a supportive and reassuring note, expressing enthusiasm about working closely with all teams and extending his good wishes to employees and their families. His informal sign-off — “Rahul (alias ‘Main Hoon Naa’)” — conveyed a message of presence and reassurance during the leadership transition.
