Priyadarshan on former assistant Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar: He did things better than me

Even after decades in filmmaking, Priyadarshan says he still feels nervous every Friday when a film releases. Speaking about the changing film industry and his former assistant Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar series, he shared thoughts on risk-taking, belief, and learning through experience.

He admitted that the first two days after a release are always stressful, as they determine whether the film connects with audiences. Despite 40–50 years in the industry, that uncertainty hasn’t gone away. He said he’s especially eager to see audience reactions to his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla, releasing on April 10.

Talking about modern filmmakers, Priyadarshan praised those willing to take bold risks, even when it goes against conventional filmmaking rules. He mentioned directors like Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Aditya Dhar, who showed confidence in making unusually long films, such as Animal. According to him, such projects succeed mainly because of the director’s strong conviction, even if producers might hesitate.

Reflecting on Dhar’s growth, Priyadarshan said he didn’t formally teach him anything, but Dhar learned by observing and working alongside him on films like Aakrosh and Tezz. He emphasised that filmmaking is often self-taught through experience and exposure rather than formal education.

He also acknowledged that Dhar has surpassed him in some ways, noting that such growth is what led to the success of Dhurandhar.
