A protest erupted on the Delhi-Agra Highway in Mathura after the death of a local cow vigilante, Chandrashekhar, popularly known as “Farsa Wale Baba,” who was killed in the early hours of Saturday.
According to locals, Chandrashekhar was chasing suspected cow smugglers on his motorcycle when he was run over near a village in the district. However, police officials stated that his death was the result of an accidental collision with a truck amid dense fog, presenting a differing account of the incident.
Tensions escalated after the incident, with locals apprehending one Muslim युवक allegedly linked to the घटना, while three others reportedly fled the scene. In response, protesters placed the victim’s body at a key junction and blocked traffic on the Delhi-Agra Highway, demanding action.
The situation turned volatile as some protesters reportedly pelted stones at police personnel. Law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the crowd and regain control of the area. Officials later confirmed that the situation had been stabilised and that efforts were underway to identify and apprehend all those involved.
Senior police officer Shailesh Pandey stated that some arrests had already been made and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for both the incident and the unrest.
The घटना also drew political reactions, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordering strict action against the culprits, while Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav condemned the killing and raised concerns about the law and order situation in the state.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities working to establish the exact sequence of events and determine accountability.
