A new phase of political manoeuvring is unfolding in Tamil Nadu as the Bharatiya Janata Party is reportedly making efforts to bring actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam into the National Democratic Alliance, according to sources familiar with the developments.
If such an alliance takes shape, it could potentially reshape electoral calculations in the state, where relatively small changes in vote share often determine the outcome of tightly contested constituencies. Vijay’s recent entry into active politics and the rapid rise in attention surrounding his party have made him a figure of growing interest for national political players.
Sources indicate that the BJP has been using several channels to establish communication with Vijay. The outreach reportedly involves multiple intermediaries attempting to open discussions about possible political cooperation. Among the channels being explored is the involvement of a deputy chief minister from another state who is believed to be acting as a negotiator in the process.
At this stage, the discussions are said to be exploratory rather than formal negotiations. Conversations have reportedly centred on the possible political advantages that a partnership could offer both sides, particularly in terms of expanding voter reach and strengthening electoral prospects.
A key factor behind the BJP’s interest in Vijay is the vast fan following he commands across Tamil Nadu. Political strategists believe that even a small fraction of his support base translating into votes could influence electoral outcomes in several constituencies. Party leaders reportedly feel that even a two percent swing in votes could change the direction of victory in many seats, given the narrow margins that often characterise elections in the state.
However, the idea of joining the NDA is said to be generating concerns within Vijay’s inner circle. Some advisers reportedly fear that aligning with an established national alliance too early could undermine the independent image that Vijay projected when he launched his political career.
Vijay had entered politics presenting his party as a new alternative in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. According to sources, some members of his advisory team worry that an early alliance might dilute that narrative and affect the credibility of the party’s positioning among voters.
The debate has also reportedly created differences within the second rung leadership of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. While some leaders believe that exploring an alliance with the NDA could provide organisational support and greater national visibility, others argue that the party should maintain distance from major alliances in its early stages in order to build a distinct political identity.
So far, neither the BJP nor Vijay’s party has officially confirmed any discussions about a possible alliance. Despite the absence of formal statements, the reported outreach has already generated significant political speculation in Tamil Nadu, where the entry of a major film star into electoral politics has introduced a new dynamic to the state’s competitive political environment.
