The SAVE America Act was cleared by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives in February but now faces a difficult path in the Senate, where Republicans also hold the majority but remain divided on key provisions. The legislation would require individuals to provide proof of US citizenship when registering to vote in the upcoming midterm elections. It also proposes criminal penalties for election officials who register voters without the mandated documentation.
Democratic leaders have strongly opposed the proposal, arguing that the stricter documentation requirements could disenfranchise eligible voters and disproportionately affect minorities, low-income citizens and the elderly. They contend that the bill amounts to voter suppression and is being pushed at a time when independent political analysts project electoral gains for Democrats in the House of Representatives.
