Weeks after being elected to the Rajya Sabha, Nitish Kumar leaves the Bihar assembly

In a significant political shift in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has stepped down from his position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), setting the stage for a broader transition in the state’s leadership. Janata Dal (United) MLC Sanjay Gandhi arrived at the Bihar Legislative Council on Monday to formally submit Kumar’s resignation letter to the secretariat.

The development was confirmed by Cabinet Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, indicating that the move is part of a larger political plan. According to party sources, Kumar is also likely to resign as Chief Minister in the coming days, fuelling speculation about a major leadership change within the JD(U)-led government.

This comes shortly after Kumar, who was sworn in for a record tenth term as Chief Minister just four months ago, contested and secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier this month, he filed his nomination in the presence of senior National Democratic Alliance leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. In the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections, Kumar secured 44 votes from MLAs, ensuring his entry into the Upper House of Parliament.

Following his election, discussions had already begun around his possible resignation from both the state legislature and the Chief Minister’s post, signalling a shift from state to national politics.

At the same time, a parallel political development has emerged within the party. Kumar’s 50-year-old son, Nishant Kumar, has formally entered politics after years of staying away. On March 8, he joined the JD(U) at the party headquarters in Patna in the presence of senior leaders, expressing his intent to actively contribute to the party’s functioning.

His entry has intensified speculation about the future leadership structure in Bihar. Political circles are actively discussing the possibility of Nishant Kumar being given a significant role in the government, including a potential appointment as Deputy Chief Minister. Reports suggest that senior party leaders have already held internal discussions on this matter, with Nitish Kumar himself involved in the deliberations.

Overall, these developments point towards an imminent political transition in Bihar, with Nitish Kumar likely shifting to a national role while the party prepares for a new leadership arrangement at the state level.
