A emaciated 9-year-old French youngster was discovered trapped in his father's van since 2024

A deeply disturbing case has emerged from eastern France, where a 9-year-old boy was rescued after allegedly being confined inside his father’s utility van for an extended period dating back to 2024. The child was discovered in extremely poor condition, severely malnourished and unable to walk, prompting immediate medical intervention and a criminal investigation.

Authorities were alerted after a neighbour reported hearing what sounded like a child inside a parked vehicle in the village of Hagenbach, located near the borders of Switzerland and Germany. Police forced the van open and found the boy lying in a fetal position, unclothed, covered with a blanket, and surrounded by garbage and human waste. The conditions pointed to prolonged neglect and confinement, with officials stating that the child had been forced to remain in a restricted position for such a long duration that he had lost the ability to walk.

The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical teams are working to stabilise his physical condition, while authorities assess the long-term impact of the ordeal on his health and development.

During questioning, the father claimed that he had confined the child in the van in November 2024 in an attempt to “protect” him, alleging that his partner intended to have the boy admitted to a psychiatric facility. However, prosecutors stated that there is no evidence to support any prior mental health issues, noting that the child had been performing normally in school before his disappearance.

The boy himself told investigators that he faced difficulties with his father’s partner and believed his father acted out of compulsion. He also revealed that he had not bathed since the time he was confined, further underscoring the severity of the neglect.

The father has been taken into custody and faces charges including kidnapping and child endangerment. His partner, who denied knowledge of the confinement, has been charged with failing to assist a minor in danger and has been released under judicial supervision.

The case has shocked the local community, with residents expressing disbelief that such an incident could occur unnoticed. Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with further details expected as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the prolonged abuse and neglect.
