A police grandma ties up a Punjabi girl and leaves her in the sweltering sun; neighbors save her

A woman assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Punjab’s Faridkot has been suspended after a disturbing incident involving her five-year-old granddaughter came to light through a viral video. The footage allegedly showed the child tied to a gate outside the residence, crying, with her hands and feet bound using cloth, and left exposed to extreme heat.

According to police officials, the incident occurred at the ASI’s home in the Dogar Basti area. The officer, identified as Sarabjit Kaur, was posted as a Mahila Mitra at a women’s helpdesk. Neighbours, alerted by the child’s cries, intervened, recorded the incident, and eventually untied her.

Authorities stated that the child’s parents are currently residing in Portugal and had left her in the grandmother’s care. Following the circulation of the video on social media, Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Pragya Jain took immediate cognisance of the matter and ordered Kaur’s suspension.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Tarlochan Singh confirmed that the action was taken due to the seriousness of the alleged misconduct, noting that such behaviour is unacceptable, especially from a police official entrusted with responsibilities related to public welfare.

The case has also been referred to the Child Welfare Committee for further assessment and necessary action regarding the child’s safety and well-being.
