A fatal road accident in Lakhimpur Kheri claimed two lives and left one person critically injured after a speeding Mahindra Thar rammed into a motorcycle in the early hours of the morning.
The victims—Jitendra Verma and his wife Sarita Verma—were returning home from a wedding ceremony around 1:30 am when the collision occurred. According to initial reports, the Thar was travelling at high speed when it struck their motorcycle, leading to a severe impact. Jitendra died on the spot due to the force of the crash, while Sarita sustained critical injuries and later succumbed during treatment at a hospital.
A third passenger, Maya Devi, who was travelling with them, survived but remains in critical condition. She has been referred to King George's Medical University in Lucknow for advanced treatment, indicating the seriousness of her injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the Thar was also returning from a wedding, reportedly from Shahjahanpur, at the time of the incident. While the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, factors such as overspeeding, late-night driving conditions, and possible driver fatigue are being examined.
Yadvendra Yadav stated that local police and emergency services responded promptly after receiving information about the accident. The vehicle involved has been seized, and a formal case has been registered based on statements from the victims’ family members.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, which will help establish the precise cause of death and any additional forensic details. Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation to determine liability and whether charges such as rash and negligent driving will be applied to the driver.
