The incident occurred during the inaugural ceremony of Know Your Artisan, a programme launched by the Jammu and Kashmir government to highlight and promote the region’s rich handicraft traditions and artistic legacy as part of the broader ‘Soulful Kashmir’ campaign. During the event, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declined to cut a ribbon designed in the pattern of the Indian National Flag, choosing instead to uphold what he viewed as a more appropriate form of respect for the tricolour.
Abdullah, who attended the ceremony as the Chief Guest, was invited to formally open the event by cutting the ceremonial ribbon. However, upon noticing that the ribbon resembled the Indian National Flag, he immediately objected to the act. He requested the organisers to remove or untie the ribbon instead of cutting it, and eventually assisted them in untying it himself, thereby avoiding any action that could be interpreted as disrespectful to the national symbol.
Following the incident, a video capturing the entire sequence quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention. Many users praised Abdullah’s decision, commending his sensitivity and principled stance. At the same time, some individuals criticised the organisers for choosing a tricolour-themed ribbon in a government function, questioning the appropriateness of such a representation.
Several users on social media platform X expressed admiration for the Chief Minister’s gesture. One user remarked that Abdullah prioritised dignity and conscience over mere symbolic display, stating that true respect is reflected in one’s values rather than ceremonial acts. Others echoed similar sentiments, describing him as a role model for demonstrating respect towards national symbols in a thoughtful and responsible manner.
However, alongside the praise, there were also voices of concern regarding the use of a tricolour ribbon at an official government event. Critics argued that such usage could be seen as insensitive or improper, reinforcing the importance of maintaining the sanctity of national emblems.
The Know Your Artisan initiative itself is designed to strengthen and showcase Jammu and Kashmir’s handicraft and handloom sectors. As part of the programme, the Chief Minister unveiled several major initiatives aimed at modernising and supporting the industry. These included the introduction of advanced testing infrastructure, high-precision fibre analysis technology, innovative design software, digital display systems, and a comprehensive branding campaign intended to enhance both the visibility and authenticity of the region’s traditional crafts.
In addition to these developments, Abdullah also inaugurated a new Geographical Indication (GI) testing laboratory, installed large LED video walls, and launched advanced fibre analysis equipment along with the DesignNWeave software developed by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar. He further reviewed the handicrafts and handloom department’s ‘Try Your Hands’ initiative, which is aimed at providing visitors and tourists with an immersive, hands-on experience. This segment includes live demonstrations that allow people to better understand the skill, effort, and intricate processes involved in creating these unique and specialised crafts.
