Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit’s long and turbulent legal journey has reached a significant turning point, with the Indian Army clearing him for promotion to the rank of Brigadier. The decision marks a major reversal in a career that remained stalled for nearly two decades due to legal proceedings and institutional delays.
Purohit’s professional trajectory was disrupted in 2008 when he was arrested in connection with the Malegaon blast case. From that point onward, his career progression effectively came to a halt. Although he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2017 and eventually reinstated into service, the uncertainty surrounding the case meant that his promotions and seniority remained frozen for years, leaving him far behind his contemporaries.
A decisive shift occurred on July 31, 2025, when a Special NIA Court acquitted him of all charges, citing insufficient evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. This acquittal not only cleared his name but also reopened the path for restoring his professional standing. Shortly afterward, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, partially addressing the stagnation in his career.
The next critical development came in March 2026, when the Armed Forces Tribunal intervened just days before his scheduled retirement. The tribunal ruled that Purohit had a valid case to be considered for promotions and benefits on par with his batchmates. It ordered that his retirement be put on hold until his pending promotion-related grievance was resolved, ensuring that his case would receive due consideration.
Following this intervention, the Army’s decision to clear him for promotion to Brigadier reflects an acknowledgment of the years he lost while under trial. It effectively restores his career trajectory to some extent, though not entirely compensating for the long period of uncertainty and delay.
Observers note that had his career not been interrupted, he might have already advanced to higher leadership roles, possibly even reaching the rank of Major General by now. Nonetheless, the latest development represents a significant institutional correction, bringing closure to a prolonged chapter of legal and professional limbo and allowing his career to move forward after years of stagnation.
