A shooting incident at a vocational high school in Siverek left at least 16 people injured after an 18-year-old attacker opened fire with a shotgun before taking his own life. The attack, which occurred inside the school premises, has shocked the region, where such incidents are considered rare.
According to Governor Hasan Sildak, the assailant fired indiscriminately at students and staff before retreating into the building. Among the injured were 10 students, four teachers, a canteen worker, and a police officer. Most victims received treatment locally, while those in more serious condition were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital.
Police units, including special operations forces, were deployed after the attacker refused to surrender. He was eventually cornered inside the school and died by suicide as authorities attempted to apprehend him. All students were safely evacuated during the operation, with footage showing them fleeing the premises in panic.
Officials have not yet determined the motive behind the attack, and a detailed investigation is underway. The incident has raised concerns about school safety, particularly given the rarity of such shootings in Turkey.
