Ahead of the Bengal elections, the ED summons Pratik Jain's family; the TMC claims this is a vendetta

In a significant development in the money laundering investigation linked to Indian PAC Consulting Pvt. Ltd., the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Pulkit Jain, brother of Pratik Jain, along with his wife Barbie Jain, to appear before its Delhi office on April 15. According to sources, both individuals are believed to possess crucial information relevant to the ongoing probe, and their names reportedly emerged during the course of the investigation.

The latest summons follows earlier action against Pratik Jain, whose premises were raided by the ED. During those searches, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had reportedly visited the location, after which the raid was halted midway, drawing considerable attention and raising questions around the proceedings.

The case has gained further momentum with the recent arrest of Vinesh Chandel, Director of Indian PAC Consulting Pvt. Ltd., as part of what appears to be an intensified enforcement drive ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Chandel, who is also the founder and holds a 33% stake in the company, was arrested on April 13, 2026, by the ED’s Headquarters Investigation Unit in Delhi under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. His arrest is linked to an FIR earlier registered by the Delhi Police.

According to the ED, the investigation has uncovered multiple financial irregularities associated with the firm. These include allegations of receiving both accounted and unaccounted funds, extending unsecured loans without legitimate business justification, generating fake invoices, and routing funds through intermediary entities. The agency has also pointed to the suspected use of hawala channels, including possible cross-border transactions, to move illicit funds.

Officials estimate that the proceeds of crime identified so far amount to approximately ₹50 crore, although this figure may rise as the investigation progresses. Following his arrest, Chandel was produced before a Delhi court, where proceedings extended late into the night from April 13 to April 14. The court subsequently granted the ED 10 days of custody for further interrogation.

The agency has recorded statements from multiple individuals connected to the transactions and claims to have recovered incriminating material during searches. It has also invoked legal provisions that hold company directors accountable for offences committed with their knowledge, consent, or negligence.

This action is part of a broader series of ED investigations and raids conducted in recent weeks, particularly in West Bengal, where several cases involving political figures are under scrutiny. The timing of these developments, close to the upcoming Assembly elections, has intensified political tensions.

Reacting to the arrest, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee alleged that the actions were politically motivated and linked them to the electoral context. In a post on social media, he criticised central investigative agencies and questioned the timing of their operations.

The Enforcement Directorate, however, has maintained that its actions are based on evidence and due legal process, and has indicated that further investigation in the case is ongoing.
