A tragic and severe road accident in Bihar’s Katihar district on April 11, 2026, resulted in the death of at least 10 people and left approximately 25 to 30 others injured after a pickup vehicle collided head-on with a passenger bus. The incident took place near Gerabari, along the busy National Highway 31, specifically on the Korha–Phulwaria Basgadha stretch, an area known for regular vehicular movement.
According to initial reports from police authorities, the collision was extremely forceful, with the pickup vehicle sustaining the maximum damage. All 10 individuals travelling in the pickup vehicle died on the spot due to the intensity of the impact. The victims, comprising both men and women, were reportedly members of a tribal community and were returning to their homes after travelling from Jharkhand. Their journey ended in tragedy when their vehicle came into direct collision with the oncoming bus.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the accident site upon receiving information. Local police, along with rescue personnel, carried out swift operations to evacuate the injured and clear the wreckage. Many of the injured passengers, primarily from the bus, were found in critical condition and were initially administered first aid at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals. Several of them have been referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment due to the seriousness of their injuries.
Authorities stated that the rescue process was challenging due to the extent of damage to the vehicles, especially the pickup van, which was severely crushed. Efforts were made to identify the victims and inform their families, while arrangements were also initiated for medical care and further procedures.
In an official statement, Katihar Police confirmed the casualty figures and the scale of injuries, noting that the situation was being closely monitored. Senior officials have indicated that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, driver negligence, and visibility are expected to be examined as part of the inquiry.
The incident has once again brought attention to the dangers associated with highway travel, particularly on heavily trafficked routes like NH-31. Concerns have been raised about road safety measures, enforcement of traffic regulations, and the vulnerability of passengers travelling in smaller or less-protected vehicles such as pickup vans.
As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on providing medical assistance to the injured, supporting the affected families, and ensuring accountability once the cause of the accident is established.
