In Bihar, a report of a jackal assault turns into murder, and the husband and grandkids are detained

A disturbing case from Bihar’s Katihar district has revealed how a woman’s murder was allegedly disguised as an animal attack, before a forensic breakthrough exposed the truth.

The incident occurred on April 2 in Azamnagar, where 70-year-old Ramni Devi was initially reported to have died after being attacked by a jackal while cutting grass in a maize field. Based on this claim, her grandson filed a complaint, and the family conducted her last rites soon after.

However, when police began investigating the case, doubts emerged. A crucial turning point came when the forensic team recovered a sharp-edged knife near the scene. This discovery ruled out the possibility of an animal attack and indicated that the woman had been fatally assaulted with a weapon.

During further questioning, investigators uncovered that her husband, 75-year-old Dhaneshwar Singh, had allegedly attacked her with the knife while they were working together in the field. She later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Police also found that the victim’s two grandsons were involved in covering up the crime. They had allegedly hidden the weapon in the same field to support the false narrative of a jackal attack.

All three accused—the husband and the two grandsons—have been arrested and sent to jail. According to police officials, they have confessed to their roles during interrogation.

Authorities stated that the murder stemmed from personal enmity between the elderly couple, and the case highlights how forensic evidence played a decisive role in uncovering the truth behind what initially appeared to be a natural or accidental death.
