Netanyahu claims that Israel is about to destroy Hezbollah's stronghold

Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel is nearing a decisive phase in its military campaign against Hezbollah, with forces closing in on the group’s key stronghold in Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon.

In a video address, Netanyahu said Israeli operations are intensifying around Bint Jbeil, which he described as Hezbollah’s central hub in the region. He asserted that Israeli forces are on the verge of dismantling the group’s presence there, marking a significant tactical objective in the ongoing conflict. According to him, continued strikes are part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and pushing it away from Israel’s northern border.

Despite the escalation on the ground, Netanyahu confirmed that Israel is simultaneously engaged in negotiations with Lebanon. He highlighted that such talks—unseen for decades—have been made possible due to Israel’s current military leverage. The stated goals of these discussions include ensuring Hezbollah’s withdrawal from border areas and establishing a framework for long-term stability under what he termed a “peace through strength” approach.

At the same time, Israeli forces have been instructed to reinforce and expand a security buffer zone in southern Lebanon, extending toward strategically significant areas such as the slopes of Mount Hermon. This indicates that Israel is not only focused on immediate military gains but also on shaping long-term security arrangements in the region.

The broader conflict traces back to late February, when coordinated military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran triggered retaliatory responses and reignited tensions across multiple fronts, including the Israel-Hezbollah theatre in Lebanon. Netanyahu noted that Israel remains closely aligned with Washington, particularly on objectives related to Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence.

He emphasised that both countries share common goals, including curbing Iran’s nuclear capabilities and maintaining secure maritime routes. However, he also acknowledged uncertainty regarding how the conflict may evolve, stating that while progress is being made on the battlefield, the overall trajectory of the war remains unpredictable.

With ceasefire pressure mounting internationally and negotiations ongoing, the situation reflects a complex balance between military escalation and diplomatic engagement. While Israel signals confidence in achieving its objectives, the continued intensity of operations and unresolved regional dynamics suggest that tensions are likely to persist in the near term.
