PM and I don't have a wife: Parliament chuckles at Rahul Gandhi's joke

Rahul Gandhi introduced a lighter moment in the Lok Sabha during an otherwise intense debate on women’s reservation and delimitation, while reflecting on the influence of women in people’s lives.

Speaking during the discussion, Gandhi emphasised that women play a central role in shaping individuals and society, noting that nearly everyone is deeply influenced by women—whether as mothers, sisters, or wives. While making this point, he paused briefly before adding “wives,” which set up a humorous remark.

With a smile, he added that both he and Narendra Modi “don’t have the wife issue,” prompting laughter across the House. The comment was seen as a rare light-hearted break in a session otherwise marked by sharp political exchanges.

Gandhi continued in a similar tone by referring to his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying she had achieved something in five minutes that he had not managed in 20 years of political life—making Amit Shah smile during her speech. This remark again drew laughter from members across party lines.

These moments stood out amid a heated debate over the proposed linkage between women’s reservation and delimitation. While Gandhi used humour to ease tensions briefly, he also reiterated his criticism of the government’s approach, arguing that tying the implementation of women’s quota to delimitation could reshape the electoral landscape.

Overall, the exchange highlighted a mix of political confrontation and occasional levity in Parliament, with Gandhi using humour to underline his broader point about the importance of women while momentarily softening the tone of proceedings.
