PM thought my singing may damage the government's reputation: Babul Supriyo remembers his time in the BJP

Singer-politician Babul Supriyo has said that his music career was significantly constrained during his time with the Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly after he became a Union minister. He explained that while entering politics in 2014, he had assumed that his artistic and political pursuits could continue alongside each other, but that expectation changed once he took on ministerial responsibilities.

Supriyo stated that as a member of the government, he was discouraged from performing publicly, as it was felt that stage appearances, especially abroad, could affect the image and seriousness of the administration. He noted that such concerns, attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s view of ministerial conduct, led him to step back from singing, even though it remained a core part of his identity. Despite complying with these expectations, he said the restriction only deepened his desire to return to music.

He emphasised that his entry into politics was driven by a genuine interest in public service, inspired by figures like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Sunil Dutt, and not by a pursuit of power. However, over time, he began to feel that his contributions were not adequately recognised, which influenced his decision to leave the BJP.

Supriyo said his transition to the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021 marked a turning point. He credited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for encouraging him to resume his musical career, describing her as someone who values artistic expression alongside public life. According to him, this support allowed him to reconnect with music without the earlier constraints.

Reflecting on his journey, Supriyo noted that although he had once considered stepping away from electoral politics to focus entirely on music, the period of restriction ultimately strengthened his dedication to his craft. He described himself as being in one of the strongest phases of his singing career now.

Currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member, he said the role offers a balance, enabling him to fulfil his political responsibilities while also dedicating time and energy to music, which he intends to pursue with renewed commitment.
