Protesters block a major highway after an Ambedkar statue is vandalized in Ghaziabad

Tension escalated in Ghaziabad after a statue of B. R. Ambedkar was allegedly vandalised in Indrapuri Colony, triggering protests, road blockades, and a strong political response.

Following the incident, hundreds of residents and Ambedkar supporters gathered at the site and staged a sit-in protest, blocking the Delhi–Saharanpur Highway. The blockade caused major traffic disruption, with police managing to partially restore movement by reopening one lane, while demonstrators continued to occupy the other.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered and a special team, including SWAT personnel, has been deployed to investigate the vandalism. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting evidence. So far, two suspects have been detained, and efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest all those involved.

The situation intensified after local political leaders intervened. Nand Kishor Gurjar visited the site and demanded that the accused be booked under the National Security Act (NSA), arguing that the act was serious enough to threaten public order. Loni Municipal Council Chairperson Ranjita Dhama also condemned the incident, calling it an attempt to disturb communal harmony in the area.

Given the sensitivity surrounding Ambedkar’s legacy and symbolism, the administration has deployed a heavy police presence to prevent escalation. Officials are in talks with protesters to clear the highway, but demonstrators have refused to disperse until strict action is taken and arrests are confirmed.

The situation remains tense but under control, with authorities closely monitoring developments and prioritising both law enforcement and restoration of normalcy.
