The Gen Z effect? After switching to the BJP, Raghav Chadha loses one million followers

The sudden exit of Raghav Chadha from the Aam Aadmi Party and his move to the Bharatiya Janata Party appears to have triggered an immediate backlash among younger audiences, particularly Gen Z, reflected in a sharp drop in his social media following. Within less than 24 hours of the announcement, Chadha reportedly lost nearly one million followers on Instagram, with his count falling from around 14.6 million to approximately 13.5 million.

The decline has been interpreted by political observers as a reaction driven largely by younger users, who had previously formed a significant part of Chadha’s support base. His political image had been closely associated with youth-centric issues, and his communication style—often focused on everyday concerns—had helped him build a strong digital presence. The sudden shift in political alignment, however, appears to have disrupted that connection.

The move itself came alongside a broader political development, as Chadha was joined by six other Rajya Sabha MPs in leaving the AAP, creating a major shift in the party’s parliamentary strength and intensifying political tensions in Delhi. While his departure had been anticipated following his removal as deputy leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha, the scale and timing of the transition drew significant public attention.

On social media, the reaction was immediate and visible. A trend calling for users to unfollow Chadha began gaining traction, with several commentators highlighting the speed and scale of the drop in followers. Some users also pointed out changes in his social media activity, including the apparent removal of older posts that had previously been critical of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chadha had earlier cultivated a distinct identity among younger voters by raising issues that are often overlooked in traditional political debates. These included topics such as paternity leave, urban traffic challenges, telecom data limitations, pricing concerns at public facilities, and the working conditions of gig economy workers. His decision to briefly work as a delivery partner for a quick-commerce platform was widely seen as an attempt to understand and highlight the challenges faced by such workers.

These efforts had contributed to his image as an accessible and relatable leader, particularly among Gen Z audiences who value direct engagement and issue-based politics. Even during earlier internal developments within the AAP, such as his removal from a leadership position, he had received notable support online.

However, his decision to join the BJP appears to have altered that perception for a section of his audience. The rapid decline in followers is being seen as an indicator of shifting public sentiment, especially among younger users who had previously engaged with his content.

At the same time, it remains uncertain whether this decline represents a long-term shift or a temporary reaction to a major political decision. As a politician known for leveraging data and public feedback, Chadha’s ability to rebuild or reshape his support base, particularly among younger demographics, will likely depend on how he repositions himself and communicates his role within his new political alignment.
