Vantara establishes the first international university for veterinary and wildlife sciences

Vantara, the wildlife conservation initiative founded by Anant Ambani, has announced the establishment of Vantara University in Jamnagar. Envisioned as a first-of-its-kind global institution, the university is designed to focus exclusively on wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences, positioning India as a leading centre for education, research, and innovation in these fields.

The university is being developed as a modern-day Gurukul, blending traditional Indian knowledge systems with contemporary scientific approaches. Its core philosophy revolves around compassion-driven education, aiming to train future professionals in wildlife medicine, conservation policy, animal care, and ecosystem management. Inspired by the legacy of Nalanda University, the institution seeks to create a holistic and purpose-led learning environment rooted in both heritage and global relevance.

The foundation ceremony reflected this vision through symbolic elements drawn from India’s ecological and cultural diversity. Soil, water, and stones sourced from various ecosystems across the country—ranging from forests and wetlands to arid and Himalayan regions—were used to mark the beginning of construction. These elements represented the idea that the university is grounded in the nation’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

Academically, Vantara University plans to offer a wide spectrum of programmes, including undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowships, and specialised training. The curriculum will cover areas such as wildlife surgery, animal nutrition, behavioural sciences, genetics, epidemiology, and the “One Health” approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health. The structure will include multiple specialised colleges aligned with real-world conservation work carried out by Vantara.

A strong emphasis will be placed on practical learning. By leveraging Vantara’s on-ground experience in animal rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation, the university aims to bridge the gap between fieldwork and academic knowledge. Students will gain exposure to both in-situ conservation (within natural habitats) and ex-situ care (in controlled environments), enabling a comprehensive understanding of wildlife management.

The institution will also feature advanced infrastructure, including clinical facilities, research labs, and a fully residential campus. International collaborations are expected to further strengthen its academic and research capabilities, ensuring global standards in conservation education.

Inclusivity forms a key part of the university’s vision. Scholarship initiatives such as the “Every Life Matters” programme and Founding Fellows scheme aim to support students from underprivileged backgrounds, ensuring access to specialised education in conservation and veterinary sciences.

Beyond academics, Vantara University is positioned as a long-term platform for addressing global challenges in wildlife protection. By integrating science, ethics, and field expertise, it seeks to create a new generation of professionals equipped to respond to complex environmental issues and ensure sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife.
