Why Raghav Chadha of the AAP received Z security from the BJP-led Center

The political situation surrounding AAP leader Raghav Chadha has intensified following a rapid sequence of developments involving his security cover, internal party tensions, and fresh allegations of political realignment. Within hours of the Punjab government withdrawing his Z+ category security, the Central government stepped in to grant him Z category protection, signalling a sharp escalation in both administrative and political dimensions of the issue.

According to official inputs, the Centre’s decision was based on a threat perception assessment conducted by the Intelligence Bureau, which recommended enhanced security for Chadha. As an interim measure, the Delhi Police was instructed to provide him immediate protection until the full Central security arrangement is put in place.

The timing of these decisions has drawn significant attention, particularly as they coincide with an apparent rift between Chadha and the Aam Aadmi Party leadership. While the Punjab government has not issued a formal explanation for withdrawing his Z+ security, sources suggest the move reflects growing differences within the party. This development followed closely after Chadha was removed from his position as Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Shortly after his removal, Chadha publicly criticised his own party through a video statement, alleging attempts to silence his voice. His remarks triggered strong reactions from senior AAP leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Atishi, and Sanjay Singh. They accused him of focusing on image-building rather than substantive parliamentary work and alleged that he had avoided taking a strong stand against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Questions were also raised about his absence during key political moments, including protests in Punjab and the period when Arvind Kejriwal was in custody.

Chadha responded by rejecting these accusations, issuing a counter statement denying all claims made against him.

Adding another layer to the controversy, AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar alleged that Chadha has been in contact with senior BJP leaders. She claimed that there was a high-level meeting between him and BJP leadership, suggesting that the Central government’s decision to provide him security was part of a broader political arrangement. Kakkar further linked this alleged understanding to Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids conducted on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal, who had recently replaced Chadha in a key parliamentary role. According to her, these developments were interconnected and indicative of a political bargain.

These claims have further fuelled speculation about Chadha’s political future. Several BJP leaders have publicly defended him, criticising AAP leadership and praising his performance in Parliament. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva described the restrictions on Chadha’s participation as inappropriate and remarked that any decision by Chadha to join the BJP would be his own choice.

The sequence of events—his removal from party positions, the withdrawal and subsequent restoration of security by different governments, and public statements from both AAP and BJP leaders—has intensified speculation that Chadha may either switch political allegiance or chart an independent path. This speculation gained further traction after he responded positively to a suggestion on social media about forming a new, youth-focused political party, describing it as an “interesting thought.”

At present, Chadha has not made any definitive statement regarding his next move. However, the unfolding developments indicate a deepening political standoff within AAP, alongside broader implications for party dynamics and alliances, particularly in the run-up to upcoming elections.
