A 1.5-foot land dispute in a Bihar hamlet resulted in the deaths of two people

A long-standing dispute over a mere 1.5-foot strip of land turned fatal in Bhojpur district after a violent clash between two groups in Madai village resulted in the deaths of two men and injuries to nearly a dozen others, police officials said.

The incident occurred in Madai village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Charpokhari Police Station.

The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Radheshyam Singh and 72-year-old Rajnath Singh, both residents of Ward No. 12 of the village.

According to police, both victims sustained severe injuries to the head, chest, and neck after allegedly being attacked with sticks and iron rods during the violent confrontation.

Local residents said tension between the two families had been building for nearly a year over ownership and possession of the narrow disputed strip of land.

The conflict reportedly escalated on Friday evening after an argument broke out regarding the construction of a brick structure on the disputed area.

What initially began as a verbal altercation soon spiralled into a large-scale physical clash involving members from both sides.

Several people, including women, were injured during the violence.

The injured were first taken to the Charpokhari Primary Health Centre for emergency treatment before many of them were later referred to Ara Sadar Hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries.

Family members of the deceased accused the rival group of repeatedly threatening them and pressuring them to vacate the disputed land.

Jalandhar Singh alleged that members of the opposing side entered their house during the confrontation and physically attacked family members.

However, the rival side denied wrongdoing and presented a different version of events.

Ramdev Singh claimed that construction work on the land had been initiated only after an official land measurement was carried out by a government surveyor.

According to him, tensions rose during the construction process and eventually turned violent.

Police teams rushed to the village shortly after receiving information about the clash and managed to bring the situation under control.

Authorities later sent both bodies to Ara Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The Bhojpur Superintendent of Police confirmed that the incident was linked to an old land dispute and stated that police had begun an investigation after receiving complaints and statements from both sides involved in the clash.

Investigators are now examining eyewitness testimonies, land records, and the sequence of events leading to the violence.

Officials said further legal action would be taken after completion of the investigation.

Police also deployed heavy security presence in the village to prevent fresh tension or retaliatory violence following the killings.

According to local residents, the deaths have left the entire village in shock and fear.

Radheshyam Singh reportedly worked in a rolling company in Jamshedpur near Tata and had recently returned to the village before the incident.

He is survived by his wife and two young children.

Rajnath Singh, the elderly victim in the clash, is survived by his wife and son.

The incident has once again highlighted how small land disputes in rural areas can escalate into deadly violence, particularly when long-standing tensions, family rivalries, and unresolved ownership conflicts remain unresolved for extended periods.
