A court in the United Kingdom has convicted James Holder, co-founder of Superdry, of rape following an incident that took place after a night out in 2022. The verdict was delivered after a jury considered charges of both rape and assault by penetration, ultimately finding Holder guilty of rape while acquitting him of the second charge.
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred after Holder and the woman had been out drinking in Cheltenham. Reports presented during the trial stated that Holder later went to the woman’s home without invitation, used the bathroom, and fell asleep on her bed. It was alleged that he subsequently woke up, called the woman—who had been resting in another room—into the bedroom, and assaulted her.
The woman told the court that she repeatedly asked Holder to stop, but he did not comply. The situation ended when she managed to leave the room, after which Holder exited the property shortly afterward. During the trial, she rejected suggestions that she had initiated the encounter.
Holder denied all allegations, maintaining that the interaction was consensual. However, after reviewing the evidence and testimony, the jury concluded otherwise, leading to his conviction on the rape charge. He was taken into custody following the verdict and is expected to be sentenced at a later date, with the possibility of a substantial prison term.
This case is not Holder’s first encounter with legal issues. In a separate incident, he had previously been disqualified from driving after admitting to driving under the influence of alcohol, receiving a ban, a financial penalty, and additional legal costs.
Holder co-founded Superdry in 2003 alongside Julian Dunkerton, initially launching the brand from a market stall before expanding into retail stores. He played a key role in shaping the company’s design direction and brand identity during its early years, contributing to its rapid growth and international recognition.
