Arvind Kejriwal credits honest governance for Punjab's 66% GST rise in April

Punjab has recorded a significant surge in tax revenues, with Goods and Services Tax collections witnessing a sharp year-on-year increase in April 2026, a development that has quickly turned into a political talking point amid ongoing friction between rival parties in the state.

According to figures released by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, post-settlement GST collections rose from ₹1,795 crore in April 2025 to ₹2,987 crore in April 2026, reflecting a substantial 66 per cent jump. The government has described this as the highest growth recorded by any state during the period, placing Punjab ahead of both larger states and the national average in terms of revenue expansion.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has linked the increase to what it describes as improved governance and administrative efficiency. Party leader Arvind Kejriwal credited the rise in collections to stronger intent and policy execution, arguing that financial constraints cited by previous governments were more a matter of governance approach than actual resource limitations. He also indicated that the additional revenue is being directed toward strengthening public services and welfare delivery.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened political tensions in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. A recent session witnessed a sharp exchange between the ruling party and the opposition Indian National Congress. Congress leaders levelled allegations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, demanding an alcohol test during proceedings, a claim that triggered strong pushback from the treasury benches and escalated into a verbal confrontation inside the House.

While the government is projecting the GST growth as evidence of fiscal improvement and administrative reform, opposition parties have continued to question the conduct and priorities of the leadership. The combination of strong revenue figures and intensifying political clashes suggests that economic performance and governance claims are likely to remain central themes in Punjab’s ongoing political debate.
