A 30-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her husband in Balotra district after he reportedly slit her throat while she was visiting her parental home along with their children during the summer holidays. Following the attack, the accused allegedly attempted suicide by stabbing himself and is currently stated to be in critical condition.
The incident took place on Saturday, May 23, and has left the local community in shock.
The deceased woman has been identified as Kanta. According to police officials, she had recently arrived at her parents’ house with her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son to spend the summer vacation there.
Her husband, Nitesh Kumar, aged 32, reportedly reached his in-laws’ residence on Saturday afternoon.
Police said that shortly after arriving, Nitesh allegedly called Kanta outside the house to speak with him privately in a nearby lane.
Investigators believe that after Kanta reached the spot, Nitesh allegedly attacked her with a knife and slit her throat during the confrontation.
The woman reportedly died on the spot because of the severity of the injuries.
After allegedly attacking his wife, Nitesh is said to have stabbed himself multiple times in an apparent suicide attempt.
According to police, despite suffering severe injuries and bleeding heavily, the accused later walked towards the village square while still carrying the knife.
Witnesses stated that he eventually sat down in front of a local shop, causing panic among nearby residents.
Locals immediately informed the police, following which officers rushed to the spot and shifted him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Because of the seriousness of his condition, Nitesh was later referred to a larger medical facility in Jodhpur for advanced treatment.
Police officials said preliminary findings suggest that an argument between the couple may have escalated violently, ultimately leading to the fatal attack.
However, investigators are still trying to determine the exact reason behind the dispute and whether there had been prior tensions between the husband and wife.
Chandra Singh, the local Station House Officer, stated that police are currently investigating all aspects of the case and gathering statements from family members and witnesses.
Authorities are also examining the sequence of events leading up to the incident and whether there were any previous complaints, domestic disputes, or signs of ongoing conflict within the family.
The brutal killing has deeply disturbed residents of the area, particularly because the incident unfolded while the couple’s children were staying at their maternal grandparents’ home during their school holidays.
Police said further legal action will proceed depending on the condition and statement of the accused once his medical condition stabilises.
