According to United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the incident occurred on Saturday night near the Cap Draa Training Area, located close to Tan-Tan along the Atlantic coast. The region is characterised by rugged terrain, including mountainous stretches and vast desert and semi-desert plains, which has added complexity to the ongoing search and rescue efforts. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway, but have not yet disclosed details regarding the circumstances that led to the disappearance or the specific unit affiliations of the missing personnel.
The African Lion exercise, which began in April and is scheduled to conclude in early May, spans multiple countries including Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, reflecting its scale as the largest annual US-led joint military exercise on the African continent. More than 7,000 troops from over 30 nations are participating in coordinated training operations designed to enhance military readiness, strengthen interoperability among allied forces, and improve responses to regional and global security challenges.
The drills involve a wide spectrum of US military components, including active-duty personnel as well as members of the National Guard, Army Reserve, Air Force, and Marine Corps.
