Security footage released by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro captures the moment Cole Tomas Allen allegedly initiated his assault during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25. The video shows Allen running through a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton and opening fire, with investigators stating that a federal agent was shot at close range during the incident. Verification of the footage was supported by matching structural details of the location and timestamp confirmation.
Authorities have charged Allen, a 31-year-old from California, with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump, along with multiple federal offences. Prosecutors argue that the attack was deliberate and premeditated, noting that Allen carried several weapons, including a shotgun and knives, and had transported firearms across state lines before the event. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.
Additional surveillance footage released by the US Department of Justice shows Allen moving through various parts of the hotel a day before the attack, suggesting that he conducted reconnaissance in advance. Investigators have also cited digital evidence indicating that he monitored Trump’s movements and planned the attack in detail, including sending messages outlining his intentions.
During the incident, chaos erupted inside the venue as attendees reacted to the gunfire, with security personnel moving quickly to evacuate high-profile guests. A member of the United States Secret Service was shot but survived due to protective gear. Trump was immediately escorted away and was unharmed.
Court proceedings have begun, with Allen appearing before a federal judge under heavy security. Prosecutors emphasised the seriousness of the charges, while the defence noted that he has no prior criminal record. The court has ordered that he remain in custody pending further hearings, where a decision will be made on his continued detention before trial.
Investigators also revealed that Allen had booked a room at the hotel in advance and travelled from California by train, reinforcing claims of planning. Messages recovered by authorities suggest he intended to target senior officials, raising broader concerns about political violence. The case continues to develop as prosecutors prepare additional charges and evidence for upcoming proceedings.
